YO TE A POLLO

There are many instances where design can help create solutions that can improve people's lives. Frugal innovation has become more popular as a result of the necessities of those living in rural areas of Guatemala.

Yo Te Apollo
is a housing system regarding broilers, designed to help empower women in Guatemala’s rural areas. This project was developed as a thesis for a Bachelor’s degree in Design by Analuz Arévalo.

Rural families in Guatemala commonly raise and consume chickens. However, in most cases, it is not done in the correct conditions. This often puts the chicken’s health at risk and increases the chances of mortality, which, for the families, results in the loss of highly valued assets. This has a direct impact on their economy.  For this reason, I decided to focus my thesis on finding a solution to this problem by applying the concept of frugal innovation.

The project was developed in the municipality of San Juan Sacatepéquez, Guatemala, alongside three women from different poultry-farming families whose chicken coops were unsanitary, putting their chicken’s health at risk.

The design helps to control waste management and optimizes the use of space. This is achieved by separating the chicken coop into separate hexagonal chambers, which can then be easily arranged at will. This helps to reduce the chance of chickens contracting diseases and then spreading them amongst themselves. The housing unit is made using low-cost materials which can easily be acquired at local hardware stores.

Enactus World Cup 2016: Eventually, thanks to the support of Enactus Landivar, this project was able to participate in Enactus World Cup 2016, a competition in which university students from around the world showcased projects of entrepreneurial action with a social impact. The competition took place in Toronto, Canada.
