INTERNATIONAL MONTESSORI SCHOOL GYMNASIUM

CONTEXTUAL ADAPTATION

The land on which the gymnasium was built is a catchment area or depression that is surrounded by two mountains, running parallel from the school bus stop (high point) to the sport fields (low point). The difference in height between the high and low points is 10 meters. One of the main factors of this project was to be able to integrate with the land and, with that, arose the opportunity to create a building that made the most of its surrounding gradients, allowing to develop this programme without damaging the forests and the surrounding view.

CONCEPTUAL APPROACH

A space like a theatre…

This space is one that provides the opportunity for events to happen; an environment that allows for memorable moments to be recorded and treasured in the lives of those that use it… this is what this design aims to communicate.

In a forest filled with pine trees and cypresses, I stand at the highest point to contemplate the view: I am surrounded by two mountains that form a depression in the centre that is lost in the horizon formed by more trees and greenness… I sit and I ask myself, ‘How am I going to be able to maintain this beautiful view so that this building is simply an excuse to come and admire it?’

The first affirmation: any activity that occurs in this area will have these very trees in the background. This same view that I see from the entrance, as if the building had never been built or as if it’s simply an addition to the view…

The limits blend into the surroundings…

The land has a concave shape, like a crate that’s buried into the ground. This shape defines my approach to the margins, and I realise that there is no alternative: the building needs to be on the same mountain, as if it were a wedged thorn that blended in with the trees and defines the internal space, allowing for the mountainsides to enter the space and become a functioning part.

The second affirmation: The outline of the building is made up of the surrounding nature - on the sides are the trees and the mountains, on the front and the rear of the building is the sky and the view that surrounds the space.

SUSTAINABILITY

Based on basic principles, the building is in function all year round with natural ventilation and lighting, allowing for a low use of energy.

North South Orientation

Natural overhead lighting is achieved with a cover formed of Vierendeel beams in the shape of a saw-tooth, North-East facing. Also, there are windows and traps that relieve the heat.

Solar Panels. Towards the South West, the covered saw-tooth has enough space to provide enough energy for the entire school. This is currently being evaluated.

Cross ventilation. The building is open towards the forest, allowing fresh, natural air to enter.

Artificial lighting controlled by motion sensor and LED low energy lightbulbs.

Sewage water treatment. The gymnasium is connected to the wastewater treatment plant. All the water that runs through is purified by 98% and is reused to water the playing fields and gardens.

Sanitary gadgets are of low energy and use sensor to prevent high usage or wasteful use of water.

Double-skin façade. This façade allows the movement of fresh air and dissipates heat prior to entering the building.

INNOVATION AND CONTRIBUTIONS

The ventilated façade of the gymnasium was designed as a dissipator of energy. It is composed from a closing with an impermeable laminate and with a second skin made from perforated aluminium laminate. This innovative design allows for a ventilated façade at a low cost and with an attractive look. The perforated design corresponds to a logical parametric cut using a CNC machine.

The production of this building creates a new and higher standard of construction regarding educational and sports buildings in Guatemala that can also serve as an example for future projects of this type.
