HOW CAN I START MY OWN ART COLLECTION?

In order to begin collecting art, there are various things we need to be clear on; we need research and work out exactly what type of collection we want and how we want to approach the process. In other words, it’s not an easy decision to make. It’s more of an investment. Which artist? Which era? Which style? What format? By what means or technique? What characteristics does it need to have for it to have any value or be coherent? How do I choose an artist that has a future?

The act of buying a piece of art is something anyone can do, even if it’s simply because we like the look of it. It’s subjective. It could be because it matches the style of our living room or the colours bring us peace, happiness or any other sensation. Collecting art, while being something we enjoy can take time, but with that, our collection can increase in value while also corresponding with our desired style. It can also allow us to put our own mark on it, making it our own.

Not everyone can make recommendations on what to buy because not everyone is prepared or fully informed. It’s important to study art and be up to date with what is happening around the world, not just in our own country. It’s important to make frequent visits to locations that promote art such as museums in our city and see what they are presenting. It’s also important to be able to select and differentiate styles, be aware of emerging artists, their influences & techniques and to be able to verify that any art we may acquire is original. This can be done by requesting certificates not just from the artist, but also from the location in which the piece is sold.

We need to be aware that by buying art without having all the information, knowing about the artist, their style, their technique, the year of its production or without truly knowing the quality of the work, we could risk the value of our collection. As well as this, while getting involved in collecting, it’s important to consider the overall ensemble, not just individual pieces.

Knowing what is happening in the artworld and its market means being aware of the pricing and possible fluctuations, something that can really help when building a collection efficiently. A good way of doing this is by going to art fairs and observing the process of how artwork is sold, who acquires it, as well as accessing information about the artists and galleries.

If we want it to be a collection that can be shared in the future, sold, or simply displayed and for it to have just as much sentimental value as economic, we’d need to securely keep electronic and/or written records. It’s also recommendable to maintain a close relationship with a respectable and trustworthy curator.

A great collection of art is one that builds and maintains itself through its history, technique, its format and the way it is acquired, but most importantly, its collector!

Here are some important questions we can ask ourselves…

Why do I want to collect art?

If I buy art, am I a collector?

Why should I invest in art?

How will I know when to invest in something, knowing that will boost the value of my collection?

Should I insure my collection? What type of documents should I obtain? Who do I insure it with?

In the recommended galleries you can find:
